According to Milton, James Atherton was the first to publish on the '47 crash. He authored several books, most notably 'Among Us' published in 1955.

Supposedly Atherton was on to something amazing, possibly direct contact. Legend has it that he was abducted by aliens because he disappeared in 1959

James Atherton somehow knew Nasedo and River Dog from the Mesiliko reservation. River Dog said he was a friend of Nasedo. Nasedo trusted him and gave him his necklace, but he must have done something to endanger or betray Nasedo, because River Dog saw Nasedo kill Atherton.

He was the corpse with the silver handprint on the chest, in the photo that Valenti shows to Liz.
The photo is marked Nov 16, 1959.

In the epi '4S' Max calls him William Atherton, and the Roswell Soundtrack also refers to him as William Atherton. William can't be his middle name, because he is listed as James P. Atherton. Maybe he is James P. William Atherton? lol
